When I was a kid in the 70's you could find me parked in front of the TV, pajamas wet and stuck to my body, every Sunday night in breathless anticipation of my favorite show..The Six-Million Dollar Man."Steve Austin, a man barely alive...We can rebuild him...better...faster...stronger.."Most likely I would have been clutching my Steve Austin action figure, prepared to assist my hero if he found himself in a difficult spot. Man, I remember that like it was yesterday! There was drama, action, and even BigFoot (played in several episodes by Andre the Giant!) There was even an "icky" girl, Jaime Summers - The Bionic Woman. The show was a huge hit for ABC from 1974 - 1978 and my friends and I were hooked.
Fast forward and I am the father of a 6 yr old boy and lo and behold NBC has dusted off the bionic concept and brought Jamie Summers out of the past, hottied her up in the form of sexy Michelle Ryan, and taken the implied super speed, strength and vision into the new millennium. Gone is the "da-da-da-da" slow motion, replaced by a kick ass soundtrack and stunning CGI visual effects. From the NBC website....

The show is being produced by Dave Eick who's re-tooling of the 70's classic Battlestar Galactica is exquisitely fucking brilliant, and based on the care taken with most of NBC's hit show Heroes this show could turn my son into a "Bionic" fan just like his old man was. I'm not sure whether I would have preferred Steve Austin or not. I also have a 12 year old daughter and just as "The Cheerleader" has been a great example of a strong woman Jaime Summers offers girls the opportunity to imagine themselves as the hero coming to the rescue. I do know that I cannot imagine myself buying a Bionic woman doll for my son, but hey you never know!
